SkateSafe
Been to RollerCon? Going for the first time? Planning on Partying?
|
|
RollerCon planners have teamed up with The SafeGames Project, a public health organization that works to protect athletes at big sports events like the Olympic Games. We have EMTs and staff to make sure you’re safe on the track - now we need your help to ensure that RollerCon attendees have a great - and safe - time boozing, sexin’ and enjoying off-track time, as well! |
Why SkateSafe?
Did you know there were 3 reported assaults on skaters last year? Enough said. Let’s take care of each other on and off the track.
Can I help?
Absolutely! You can start by considering safe ways to party, like The Buddy System. Vegas is full of predators that look for tourists to exploit, both financially, physically, and otherwise. And its easy to think you’re safe in a hotel full of skaters. But what if they don’t actually know you, or they’re drunk, too? Make sure you don’t leave anyone alone. Travel in packs! Its a lot harder for evildoers to do evil to you and your friends when you’re together. Look for these and other SkateSafe tips at our RollerCon booth in the Registration Area.
Then What?
Stop by our booth at RollerCon. We’ll have lots of information about how to keep ourselves and each other safe and aware. We’ll be giving away condoms and SafeKits with lube, Emergen-C and other party gear, plus local resources, cool shit from our sponsors, and a lot more. Stop by!

Did you take the SkateSafe survey? 298 people did. Here are some observations from those results:
- 56.7% of survey-takers have been to RollerCon before, 43.3% are newbies (Q #5)
- 98% will be away from home while at RollerCon – away from their usual support, family, resources, etc. This is especially important in the case that someone is involved in a serious incident. All the more important for us to be sure we’re looking out for each other, we’re making it known to the attending community that RC is available to support them, and we’re offering continuing support should an incident occur (Q #6)
- At least 83.7% of those surveyed plan to drink in some capacity at RollerCon (Q #1)
- More than half of those drinking plan to drink 3 or more at any one time, with 17.3% saying they’ll drink 5 or more (Q #2)
- While the recreational drug of choice, statistically, is alcohol, we do have a small percentage of attendees who plan to use other drugs while at RollerCon. A question about opiates (specifically, and not under the umbrella of “Pills”) was left out of the survey by mistake. Risk-wise, opiates (in pill or other form) are of particular concern when combined with alcohol, as combining the two greatly increases the chance for overdose when compared to either used alone (Q #4)
- While 61.4% of those surveyed observed douchebaggery on the part of strangers at RollerCon, 48.3% observed the same by other derbyfolks. 10.9-18.3% experienced other types of unpleasant interactions with strangers and other RollerCon attendees, including some incidences that felt legitimately dangerous (Q #s 8 & 9)
- Most respondents were female, and most of them typically have sex with men. While we’ve all heard the jokes about “gay while derby” or while at RollerCon, considering that statistically there are far fewer men in attendance and the majority of women surveyed typically have sex with men, those men who are attending RollerCon have a special responsibility when it comes to how they choose to interact with women while at the event (Q #s 10 & 11)
- About half of the respondents feel they’ve taken care of themselves well while at RollerCon. The other half placed themselves at varying levels of care, from moderate to haggard. Sleep seems to be what escapes most, while hydration doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue. (Q #s 13 & 14)
