Skating at RollerCon

Everyone is welcome to skate at RollerCon. Refs, EMTs and many volunteers are on hand during the convention to be sure that everyone skates safely and with all the proper gear. Here are some tips about skating at RollerCon.

Skater Skill Levels: Check out our definition of skill levels. Classes and scrimmages will be listed with these levels.

Requirements for Skating at RollerCon Events:

  • No unsafe behavior will be tolerated.
  • Proof of RollerCon Registration and insurance is required for all skaters at all skating events.
  • You must sign the RollerCon skating waiver form at RollerCon check-in.
  • All skaters must wear knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and a helmet and mouthguard at all times while wearing skates.
  • Skating Refs must wear all the same safety gear with the exception of mouthguards.
  • Skaters deemed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be banned from skating.
  • Every skater must pass a safety / gear check before every skating event.
  • The Head Ref and Safety Officers are the final judges of whether or not you may skate.
  • Any attempt to circumvent any of these requirements will get you thrown out and ridiculed for being a total idiot.

ALCOHOL & SKATES
Just to make it perfectly clear: NO ONE that smells of alcohol or is in any way under the influence will be permitted to skate in RollerCon events. Trained EMT staff and refs will attend every skating event, they are empowered to make that judgement call. Their decision is final.

Skating in the DAYTIME:
You can get a very serious sunburn in TEN MINUTES of daytime desert exposure. Wear hats, sunblock and stay hydrated and out of the sun at all times. No RollerCon skating events take place outside during the day (anymore, because we’re not insane & we learned that lesson the hard way in 2005).

ABOUT THE SKATING SURFACES:
Las Vegas Sport Center
Training sessions, scrimmages, challenges from 9am - 11pm every day
Surface: The facility is VERY SLIPPERY smooth polished cement, but we’re hoping to get modular flooring in there for 2010. Stay tuned.
Inside Tracks (training, challenges, bouts): Try your fave wheels, but bring hybrids for backup.

Fremont Street Experience - Challenges - 4-7 Wed-Friday
Surface - Patterned cement (shallow “cobblestone” design stamped into the cement) with manhole covers (marked) on some edges.
Photos:
Fremont * More * Another * Last One
Wheel Recommendations: Hybrids or soft indoor wheels. Firm wheels for advanced skaters. Outdoor wheels will work well if you’re accustomed to playing in them, but high profile (65mm +) can be a disadvantage because they catch in the seams.
Notes - Recommend INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED skill levels only. BRING WATER!!! Its very hot & dry, PLUS the hours we’re there are peak traffic times so the exhaust fumes can be overwhelming. Smart captains will plan a larger jammer rotation than usual.

Skatepark Tour - Las Vegas - every night
NOT A ROLLERCON INSURED EVENT. Know that you’re skating at your own risk.
Surface - varied, unpainted cement. We’re famous for huge vert skateparks and lots of them.
Wheel Recommendations: varies (but we prefer firmer than we use for track skating - really cheap indoor wheels [Demons / Vapors, etc] are especially great)
Notes - Exercise extreme caution. The tour is NOT covered by RollerCon insurance or USARS and all skaters are skating at their own risk. This is not a RollerCon event; please be very careful.
