JULY 25-29

Athletic Training Calendar

2012 Training Camp
Info coming soon!

RC12 has room for A LOT of tracks. We’re still planning, finagling, and recruiting the very best coaches and staff, and will post more info here as it is sorted out.

Check out a track map of the 2012 MVP-only training area.

HOW DO YOU SIGN UP?
Most classes are open to all registered, insured MVP passholders. There is no pre-registration or sign-up. You will be able to line up before classes.

IT GETS CROWDED
We’ve scheduled kick-ass classes at the same time and asked coaches to lead popular sessions more than once. We quadrupled our trackspace and limited MVP passes, and we’ve scheduled early. But - high profile classes will still fill up fast. RC has more facilities, coaches and classes than any training camp, but we also have more attendees. Peak hour classes will fill first; plan accordingly. We’ve scheduled classes during big social events, and popular coaches are offering early morning / late night sessions, as well; those are likely to be less crowded. If you do want to train during peak hours and your classes are full, consider off-skates athletic training, as well. Off skates athletic training is scheduled in the Top of the Riv and can be found on the seminar schedule. And don’t forget - its not just a training camp, its a CONVENTION, so you can also go to one of the other twelve types of events, including social stuff, seminars, and more!

Coaches have the ability to limit entry or make skill level (or other relevant) requirements. Some classes are marked “Jrs Welcome” or “International.”
- “Jrs Welcome” is kind of self-explanatory.
- “INTL” means International, Hawaiian & Alaskan MVP Passholders will get priority entrance. If they don’t fill those classes, the coach will open it to continental US passholders, as well.

HINT: bring water & both black & white shirts *preferably with a legible name* to ALL on-skates classes (even if it doesn’t say so in the schedule). If your name isn’t visible, how can you get feedback? Look in the class info for a description that will include anything else you need to participate.

PLEASE NOTE:
RollerCon planners schedule only the best coaches. But it is your responsibility to make sure you don’t do anything unsafe for you. Information gathered should be modified to fit your own personal needs, business models, athletic competence, health concerns and limitations, and state requirements. All skaters should execute proper safety precautions prior to attempting any skills demonstrated or shown. All RollerCon registrants participate in conference events solely at their own risk.

The training, opinions, findings, and conclusions offered during Rollercon are those of the authors or speakers and not necessarily those of the speaker’s league, or the hosts or planners of the RollerCon conference. The materials and information presented are for informational purposes only & are not legal advice or counsel.

** THIS SCHEDULE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE **
Count on it. Our coaches are also scrimmaging, Challenging and going to each other’s classes, so the schedule is likely to change right up til it gets published in the program. Best to just be chill about it all.

If you don’t see classes, have you scrolled to the right date?

Filthy, ungodly hot, filled with exhaust fumes; we skated til we dropped. Lots of coaches - and skaters! - got their start here.

We finally move indoors! It was a huge relief, but crowded, and the cement floor was super slippery. Still awesome!

We doubled our tracks & coaches & got a grippy floor, but people complained both that classes were too hard to get into & too full.

(photos coming soon)
RollerCon 2011
Three dedicated training tracks, 12 hours every day and over 60 coaches. Peak hours classes were mostly full at 60 people, but most MVPs were able to get training on skates all day long if they wanted - indoor, air-conditioned, and from the best derby coaches on earth. No one complained!

Dirty Deborah Harry is a former figure skater who literally grew up in the roller rink. She learned everything she knows about teaching the “art” of skating from her World Champion figure skating mother and her National Champion speed skating dad! Her love of skating brought her to derby and her belief in the priceless value of solid fundamentals has her teaching skating skills from rank beginner to advanced - and her training as a stand up comedian makes her classes even better. She was voted by far the favorite coach at RollerCon 2011 by the skaters who completed our opinion polls afterwards.

Donna Skatrix, a former competitive roller skater/instructor, fell in love with skating at age three and the rest was history! She was also a competitive figure skater on ice. Now that she’s “gone derby,” she loves to share her skating knowledge with others freely and believes that NOBODY is ever done learning to skate. “Use it or lose it!” is her motto for skating. DirtyDeborah Harry said she should charge for her skating lessons. She has yet to take her advice… She (and her parents) have spent thousands on her skating and you can learn most of it (except the frilly stuff), free! Don’t YOU wanna learn some tricks from Donna Skatrix?!

Evil Lucian is a biology instructor at New Mexico State University. She is the captain of her team in Las Cruces, NM and a youth soccer coach. She’s currently skating for the SoCal Derby, Team Awesome and Team Vagine and has coached teams from all over the continental US and Hawaii, Canada, Europe and South America. She’s also the founder and Head Planner for Rollercon, was a founding board member of WFTDA, co-owns Sin City Skates, and contributes to Five on Five Magazine and Derby News Network.

Quadzilla L.K. has been a pro skater and derby player since you were in diapers. He is a featured skater in TV commercials, for pete’s sake. He’s coached modern derby clinics all over the US, UK and Australia, and coached seasons for Team Legit & the Oly Rollers. But his heart is in Rat City, where he’s coached since 2008. His day job is being awesome for Heartless Wheels. He plays for the Puget Sound Outcasts, Team seXY, and the Co-ed Cripplers. Quadzilla will whip out kick ass jam skater tricks at the slightest provocation; ask him.

Razorslut is the nicest person in Los Angeles, and is outstanding at picking up new strategies and applying them. She’s been skating for the LA Derby Dolls since forever, pretty much, and has captained, coached and bench-managed her way into everyone’s hearts and minds. Slutty is currently working on a reproduction project outside of derby, but has taken time out of lying on her back to join Iron Maiven (star of such feature films as “Whip It!”) to drop some hard-earned blocking knowledge on her derby sisters.

Over the past 7 years she has skated for her home team the Holy Rollers, TXRD’s travel team the All Scar Army and the fantastic Vagine Regime. Smarty’s day job is coaching rowing on Town Lake in Austin. She started applying what she knows about coaching to derby in 2004 when she traveled to NYC to train the newly formed Gotham Girls. She has since trained LA Derby Dolls, Atlanta Rollergirls, and several leagues in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Smarty uses sport theory and common sense to teach derby strategy. When training skater skills such as agility, speed, transitions and stance she prefers to focus on the intricacies of each skater’s unique style. As a trainer she is sensitive to the needs of the athlete and well aware of the process of learning. While she prefers to have 3-4 weeks to train a league, she does enjoy shorter training sessions such as RollerCon. She takes the sport of derby very seriously and holds much respect for its growth, yet tries to create a relaxed and humorous learning environment.

Teaching skaters the correct way to skate and seeing them excited about what they’ve learned is a passion for her.

** we also had scores of off-skates athletic seminars about nutrition, cross-training, and more, but this year is going to be even better **
